We had a lovely evening at the Jackson Wellsprings when Human and Freedom did a show there, back in the spring. Human is a good friend of ours, whose music sometimes feels like a soundtrack to our lives since we moved to Oregon and got plugged into alternative culture. We spent six months living on his homestead in Costa Rica last year, and the girls hadn't seen him since then, so it was really fun to be at his show and spend time with him that evening.
Matthew Human is a singer/songwriter with incredible talent for insightful lyrics that are radical and peacefully revolutionary. His albums are all recorded with great musicians and a variety of instrumentation, sliding around between genres such as country, folk, reggae, hip hop, and rock. Most of his songs are good to get you up and dancing, and the message is always positive and earnest.
He put on a great show that night, and we enjoyed spending more time with him later on in the evening, after Freedom's set. Freedom Child is another well known musician in the consciousness culture of the northwest. His music is ballad-like and rich with spiritual insight, and his guitar playing is very soothing, with a tribal groove kind of sound.
I don't know Freedom as well, but I have seen him perform several times, and I always like the kind of crowd that comes around to such shows. We ran into several people we knew, including an old neighbor from when we first moved to Oregon in 09, Orchid Mandala. I hadn't seen the fellow in some six years, so I was glad to reconnect. The kids also had a blast, dancing and running around in loops around the floor with a whole string of other kids.
After the show some people brought guitars around the stone fire pit (the Wellsprings is a quasi-outdoor venue) and a few new people played some of their songs. It was a fine night, the kind that makes us glad to live where we do, where a culture of freedom and human connection still exists.
If you've never heard Human's music, it's definitely worth checking out! Just go to his website. Also, he has a video that made to the top of some country charts recently, I Want Your Shoes Under My Bed. He's got so much great music, and he has been helping to raise awareness and encourage people envision a better way ever since he began his prolific career. I highly recommend the music!
