The spirit of the revolution flows through some stronger than others, and seldom will you find a more powerful warrior for truth and justice than Alais Clay. Like an arrow let fly from the jungle, aimed straight at the throat of the commander of an invading conquistador column, her music cuts down the colonial paradigm and speaks to the part of the soul that yearns to be free.
I first learned about Alais at Anarchapulco, where she played a killer hip hop set. Her lyrics are highly pertinent to the times, packing all the power, potency, profundity of a warrior spirit, unmasking the monster and tearing back the veil. With the ferocity of Immortal Technique and the poetic eloquence Walt Whitman, she speaks the truth unabashedly while maintaining a spiritual perspective that is not without hope. She put on a great show, and I was inspired to buy her album End of an Era.
I took a video of one of her songs, New World Police State, which happened to be one of the best ones I heard all night. The words are as heavy as the topic matter, but the message is clear. If you aren't ready to stand up, you better be ready to bow down.
Check out her website, where you can stream her albums for free. If you can, buy some CDs to support her work, or at least check her out on Facebook and give it a like if you're down with the message, which the world needs to hear right now. These are dangerous times, and while speaking out against the rise of a global fascist dictatorship may have its dangers, nothing could be more dangerous than remaining silent.
