Last weekend I had the distinct honor to sit down with James Evan Pilato of Media Monarchy in Portland. James's morning radio show has become one of my favorite sources for news on the web. His network of twitter contacts seems to get him tuned into breaking stories faster than anyone else out there in alt. media, and he brings the most curious, bizarre, and fascinating anecdotes to light. How else would such peculiarities as Bad Self Eater or J.T. LeRoy ever have been brought to our attention?
Most importantly, though, James is highly entertaining. His background in radio equips him with an excellent sense of wit and timing, and I find myself laughing aloud in just about every episode. This is no small feat considering how grave the news usually is. Yet still James finds enough good news to put an episode of Good News Next week every week, which brings us some hope in the face of otherwise overwhelmingly dystopian current events. So if you aren't already a listener, I highly recommend the Media Monarchy, with weekly good news stories, Morning Monarchy, which is live every weekday at 9 am, and then Pump up the Volume, a daily DJ set that comes on weekdays at noon. (You can also watch later... each episode is archived.)
So without further ado, here is my interview with James. My apologies for the loud music in the background. It was as if the restaurant turned the music way up right when we got started. (Also, the cut towards the end is because of my camera's run length running out, not a content edit. We were wrapping it at that point anyway...)
Thanks again to James. Keep up the good work!
