I had a great time exploring Belle Island, which is a park on an island in Richmond, VA. I was invited there by a couple I know through Liberate RVA. We had a beautiful sunny afternoon, and we enjoyed several hours walking the trails, going up into the woods, and exploring an old hydro plant on one end of the island.
The island was used as a POW camp during the Civil War, and we saw the site where the prison camp had been set up. There is nothing left of it now. The island was later used for various industrial purposes, and bones of those structures are still around.
The hydro plant was still pretty much there, though it was gutted. We had to go under a drainage tunnel and then climb a wall to gain access to the old facilities, but that just made it more fun.
I'm super thankful that Luke and Sarah invited me along. It was a really fun afternoon. That's the kind of thing I used to do all the time when I was younger; sneaking in and exploring old closed down industrial infrastructure is an integral part of growing up in the our declining civilization.
