San Francisco! I love this city. I first came here to visit my cousin Todd back in 05, and I’ve been going back often since I moved to the Northwest. I rolled into town this time with a Craigslist rideshare, which deposited me in Oakland. I took the BART over to San Francisco, during which time I saw a cool performance by a brother and sister dance duo.
I got off the BART at Civic Center, forgetting that it would have been smarter to transfer to the Muni and get closer to Todd and Susan’s house. Instead I ended up walking about twenty blocks, which took over half an hour. I had all my stuff from South America still, and it was tiring.
It was wonderful to see Todd and Susan again. The last time I came through town they were out on a sailing voyage and I missed them. This time I was going to get to go sailing with Todd, who was celebrating his birthday. So the next day we headed out onto the bay, and boy did we get some great weather! It was gorgeous!
We went out past Alcatraz, though we didn’t go as far as the Golden Gate Bridge. We wanted to get back to the house in time for the house party that Todd and Susan had for their birthdays. (Susan’s birthday was the next day, so they celebrated together.)
Todd has a new boat, which is really nice. She’s a forty foot Norseman 447 that goes by the name Ada, named after the first female computer programmer. We had good wind for most of the journey, and we only motored in and out of the marina, and for the final stretch home when the wind let up. So nice to be on the water!
The birthday celebration was great fun, with so much delicious food. Susan made all sorts of goodies, and there was a great cake as well. I met some more of their friends and we all had a good time.
That was about it for my stay. I had only one full day, with a night and morning on either end. The next day I had to fly out to Florida, so I said my goodbyes and thanked Todd and Susan for having me. It’s always a pleasure!
Next stop, Miami, where I had a rideshare arranged to get me to Naples. Only when I landed, I discovered that my ride had fallen through while my phone was off. Fortunately, fate would hand me an even better option, but more on that in the next article.
